Sara Benninga Looking Beyond Paintings, Drawings, Prints Festive Opening Saturday 12 Feb 2022 at noon Curator: Ady Greenfeld
Sarah Benninga, a young promising avanguard artist, presents contemporary, innovative, expressive compositions, in large formats and vibrant colors. Dr. Benninga is a scholar of Art History and a lecturer in Bezalel Academy of Art and Tel Aviv University Faculty of Arts. Her extensive knowledge in the history of art and particularly of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, with emphasis on the art of the Low Countries, Benninga has created a unique artistic language that, while personal and intuitive, communicates with themes in the history of art. The exhibition presents a selection of the artist's extensive body of work on various themes of her interest, with emphasis on the gaze as portrayed in many of her works. The gaze in art is largely discussed as having psychological, philosophical, and social meanings. In some artworks, the gaze creates a triangulation between the items presented in the painting, the artist directing and leading the way, and the viewer who, although present outside the picture, yet becomes a part of the representation. Through the gaze of the characters, Benninga creates layers that expand the work into an imaginary space, leading the viewer to "look beyond". The exhibition presents the creative process, and provides an opportunity to explore the interaction between the academic study
of art history and lecturing to students on the one hand, and the personal, intimate creation of art on the other.
